Today is the International Day of Giving. Black Friday and Cyber Monday have been around for years, but International #Giving Tuesday was started in 2012, through a brilliant initiative by the 92nd Street Y, a nonprofit cultural and community center in New York City that has been around since 1874.
Observed annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.), and following on the heels of the popular shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday launches the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. According to #GivingTuesday’s website, “Since its inaugural year in 2012, #GivingTuesday has become a movement that celebrates and supports giving and philanthropy with events throughout the year and a growing catalog of resources.”
Driven by social media, the movement has had an enormous ground swell of success since it was launched. It currently has 30,000 partners in 68 countries, it has seen a 470% increase in giving since its inception in 2012, and it has received more than 32 Million Twitter impressions and 15.4 BILLION global impressions in print and social media.
In Rochester, United Way christened International #GivingTuesday with the special name ROC the Day. Through this online initiative, United Way makes it super easy to give one or more donations in any amount, starting at $5, to hundreds of non-profit organizations throughout Monroe and adjacent counties. The beauty is that, for those who have the best of intentions to make giving a part of their year-end practices, but sometimes get to January and discover those intentions got lost in the holiday shuffle, ROC the Day is a great reminder!
And although the United Way makes it easy to find and donate to new or your favorite charitable and other organizations, International #GivingTuesday is a great reminder that you can also donate directly to the organizations you love and want to help support!

P.S. And in case you wonder at the success of this initiative, the amount of donations made on the ROC the Day website during the time it’s taken me to write this post has increased by over $20,000!
