Although July seems a long way off right now, in reality, summer is right around the corner. And each summer, RCTV partners with Writers & Books on two summer camps that bring the magic of books and filmmaking together for young people.
The kids come to RCTV and learn all about using the equipment in the TV studio as well as how to do field work, then they select one or more Newbery Award or Newbery Honor Books and produce a 90-Second video that’s submitted to the 90-Second Newbery Film Festival.
The amazing part is that kids, who may never have held a camera before or considered filmmaking, end up writing the script, choosing locations, sets, props and costumes, setting up lights and audio equipment, directing and filming. Some even jump into editing. And they all have a blast doing it!
The camps are divided by age group and take place on the following dates:
- July 6 – 10, 9 AM to 3:30 PM – This RCTV/Writers & Books 90-Second Newbery camp is for kids from 9 to 12 years of age.
- August 24 – 28, 9 AM to 3:30 PM – This RCTV/Writers & Books 90-Second Newbery camp is for teens from 13 to 16 years of age.
Writers & Books tries to make their classes accessible to every student, regardless of their financial situation. If you know students who could benefit from (and enjoy!) these (or other Writers & Books) programs, but may not have the means to pay for them, scholarships are available!
