“The idea for the 72 Hour Mind2Movie Challenge came from a couple of young, talented filmmakers who were planning to drive to Washington, D.C. to participate in a 48 hour film festival,” shared Stanley Main, the Founder of Rochester Movie Makers. Rochester Movie Makers is the non-profit organization that has held the Mind2Movie Challenge for the past “five or six” years.
Stan said he decided that if filmmakers were willing to drive from Rochester to Washington to participate in a 48-hour filmmaking competition, it could be a great draw here in Rochester.
“But I decided to do it over a long weekend, so us older guys would have a chance to get some sleep in,” he chuckled.
“For those who want to make films, it’s the best way to dip your toes in the water,” he added. “You come out of it with a short film and don’t spend ten or twelve months making a 10-minute piece.”
During the Mind2Movie Challenge, as many as 20 teams conceptualize, write, shoot, edit and score a short film of five minutes or less from start to finish, in a mere 72 hours. The teams will gather at RCTV on Thursday, January 22 to receive their assignments of a prop, a character and a situation that must be incorporated in the script. Any team may choose to make the environment its character, in which case, the work will be eligible to be shown in the Fast Forward Film Festival being held April 17 and 18, 2015.
This event generally leads to a wide variety of fun submissions that, in the past, have run the gamut from animation and film noir, to horror flicks and comedies. Below,”The Astounding Lagomorph” is one of the comedies submitted by Matt DeTurck, Katie Kumler and Adam Lubitow in 2014.
Join Rochester Movie Makers and friends on Monday, February 9 at 7 PM at the Cinema Theater, located at 957 Clinton Avenue South for an evening of fun and flicks, as intrepid teams of filmmakers screen their creations and talk about their works. Admission is $5, and the event is open to the public.
P.S. There are still several spots left for filmmaking teams. If you’d like to sign up to participate, the fee is $35 for Rochester Movie Maker Members and $70 for Non-members. The registration deadline to sign up to participate is Sunday, January 18. Assignments will be given out at RCTV (21 Gorham Street off St. Paul Street in Rochester) at 6 PM on Thursday, January 22. Your completed film must be delivered to the Mind2Movie Officials at RCTV by 7 PM on Sunday, January 25. Click here to read the rules and FAQs of the challenge.
P.P.S. If you would like to crew on one of the Mind2Movie teams, go to the Rochester Movie Makers facebook page and post that you’d like to volunteer.
