At the beginning of each year, entrepreneur, social media guru and business consultant Chris Brogan advises undertaking an exercise to come up with three words that will shape your year. Those three words aren’t a phrase like “Produce More Shows” or “Get In Shape.” They’re three distinct words – sometimes related, sometimes not – that set the pace for your entire year. Unlike a resolution that gets made and forgotten, if you do it right, those three words have staying power, produce results, and see you through to the end of December. They frame a promise to yourself and help you get there.
If you follow Chris’ link, you’ll discover what his words have been since 2006. Some of them may not make any sense to you, unless you follow the links to his blog posts explaining his choices. During that time, he has grown in renown and influence, and expanded the services he offers. He no longer has to pursue large companies for business. They seek him out.
Last year, my three words were: Focus. Generate. Disseminate. I chose the word Focus to make sure the “horses” aren’t all pulling in different directions; Generate incorporates creation, production and completion; I chose Disseminate to share and get the piece out and in front of people. It makes little sense to work hard on creation and production if you are the only one benefiting from the process.
I can still improve on focus. I tend to put too many eggs (projects) in the basket. (In fact, in his latest newsletter, he shares why focus is not a great word to choose). But the words “generate” and “disseminate” inspired me to launch a new TV show (Conversations with Creatives) for which I produced more than 20 episodes, and set up a website/blog and facebook page for it. I also collaborated with friend Debra Ross (Owner of KidsOutAndAbout.com) on a book we’ll be releasing later this month called Seasons and Reasons – A Parent’s Guide for Cultivating Great Kids.
So I’d say those three words worked pretty well to keep me on track last year, and I’m working on the three words I’ll set in action for this year.
So, what about you? What are your three words for 2015, and where will they take you? We invite you to share them in the comments section. Where do you hope they’ll take you by the end of 2015?
